Argumentative Essay

In most cases you will be asked to use this type of writing. 

"The most important thing about an argumentative essay type is that the writer must know the topic, and must have a great deal of knowledge about the reasons why people support or oppose it."

  • What are you claiming?
  • What are your reasons?
  • What evidence supports your reasons?
  • But what about other points of view?

The structure of the argumentative essay is held together by the following.

  • A clear, concise, and defined thesis statement that occurs in the first paragraph of the essay.
  • Clear and logical transitions between the introduction, body, and conclusion.
  • Body paragraphs that include evidential support.
  • Evidential support (whether factual, logical, statistical, or anecdotal).
  • A conclusion that does not simply restate the thesis, but readdresses it in light of the evidence provided.

Expository Essay

The purpose of an expository essay is to describe or explain a specific topic. It:

Narrative Essay

When writing a narrative essay, one might think of it as telling a story. These essays are often anecdotal, experiential, and personal—allowing students to express themselves in a creative and, quite often, moving ways.

  • If written as a story, the essay should include all the parts of a story.
  • The essay should have a purpose.
  • The essay should be written from a clear point of view.
  • Use clear and concise language throughout the essay.
  • The use of the first person pronoun ‘I’ is welcomed.
  • As always, be organized!

Comparative Essay

In the compare/contrast essays require at least two or more topics. The differences and the similarities must shown in the essay.
