The Empress Theodora
Mosaic from San Vitale, Ravenna, Italy, ca. 550 CE
The Greek civilization is inextricably related to the Byzantine era. The Byzantine Empire can be traced to 330 A.D., when the Roman emperor Constantine I dedicated a “new Rome” on the site of the ancient Greek colony of Byzantium. The blossom of the Byzantine civilization reflected the influence of the Greek, Roman and Oriental cultural presence.
