CMOS Online

The Chicago Manual of Style Online is the venerable, time-tested guide to style, usage, and grammar in an accessible online format. It is the indispensable reference for writers, editors, proofreaders, indexers, copywriters, designers, and publishers, informing the editorial canon with sound, definitive advice.

The Chicago Manual of Style is a style guide for American English published since 1906 by the University of Chicago Press. Its 17th editions have prescribed writing and citation styles widely used in publishing. The guide specifically focuses on American English and deal with aspects of editorial practice, including grammar and usage, as well as document preparation and formating. It is available in print as a hardcover book, and by subscription as a searchable website as The Chicago Manual of Style Online.

On the home page, there are 2 fields that take you to the page you want to go

If you want to go to the Main Content there are two ways.

First, you can click CMOS 17th in the tab menu.

 

Or you can click the Chicago Manual of Style Contents in the large button.

 

You can reach the main table of content's page from anywhere by clicking on the tab menu. You can find the content below.

The Citation Quick Guide is one of the most popular page in the CMOS Online.

 

You can reach the page both from large button portal and tab menu.

 

When you chose Notes and Bibliography System or Author Date System you will find examples on the right side of the page.

There multiple ways to find what you are looking for in CMOS Online.

-Search Box

The Search Box is located in the large button portals on the home page. On other pages, it is in the upper corner of the page.

When you search something in this section, the results are shown in several tabs. The first tab shows the results in CMOS Online. The second tab shows the results in Q and A. Depending on what you have written, results may appear in other tabs.

 

You will see another field on the search box. "Go to Paragraph" tab. If you know what paragraph you are looking for and what is the number of the paragraph is , you can directly go this paragraph by typing there.

 

You will see the index tab above the paragraph tab. The CMOS Online index is the same as the index on the back of the printed book. The difference is online version has links. In this way, you can reach the contents by clicking on them.

 

There are questions and answers. This area is where users write their questions and are answered once a month. You can find answers to your questions and also you can submit your questions by using Submit A Question button.

 

Because of the volume of mail received, they say they are not able to answer all questions individually and not all questions can be used. Preference will be given to questions that are not answered here or in the manual.

Please check the Q and A monthly to see whether your question has been selected to be featured-and answered on the site. 

If you wish to subscribe to Q and A Alerts you can register by filling out the form under the Help and Tool headings. Thus you will receive a monthly email with new questions about Chicago Style that are answered.

In the Help and Tools section, you will see the topics that may be useful for you. It gives some technical informations. For example, you can find out what differences are in the 17th edition from there.
