The Library has been involved as one of the stakeholders in transition to Open Science process of Koç University with an open access team which is working to support and to strengthen the transition to Open Access / Open Science through training, education, and awareness-raising activities geared toward researchers and all other staff, and additionally, to provide the necessary infrastructure to effectuate this transition.

Open Access (OA) research outputs are digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. What makes it possible is the internet and the consent of the author or copyright-holder.

OA is compatible with peer review, and all the major OA initiatives for scientific and scholarly literature insist on its importance. Just as authors of journal articles donate their labour, so do most journal editors and referees participating in peer review.

An Open Access Publication is one that meets the following two conditions:

1. The author(s) and copyright holder(s) grant(s) to all users a free, irrevocable, worldwide, perpetual right of access to, and a license to copy, use, distribute, transmit and display the work publicly and to make and distribute derivative works, in any digital medium for any responsible purpose, subject to proper attribution of authorship, as well as the right to make small numbers of printed copies for their personal use.

2. A complete version of the work and all supplemental materials, including a copy of the permission as stated above, in a suitable standard electronic format is deposited immediately upon initial publication in at least one online repository that is supported by an academic institution, scholarly society, government agency, or other well-established organization that seeks to enable open access, unrestricted distribution, interoperability, and long-term archiving (for the biomedical sciences, PubMed Central is such a repository).

The Open Access movement is the worldwide effort to provide free online access to scientific and scholarly research literature, especially peer-reviewed journal articles and their preprints.

The Open Access movement started out with a series of statements or declarations. Historically the movement has progressed and gained momentum since 2002 through three major statements made in Budapest, Betheseda and Berlin.

UNESCO Digital Library: Introduction to Open Access

Open Access (OA) provides direct, free and online availability of research output without copyright restrictions by publishers and increases the visibility of a publication enormously.

Within the frame of the “Koç University Open Access Policy” in 2014, Green Road Open Access publishing is mandatory for all authors/co-authors at Koç University. The authors/co-authors must input the final accepted author’s version of a peer-reviewed article with the required metadata in the Koç University Institutional Repository.

Koç University Suna Kıraç Library endorses the principles of Open Access and seeks to make the University’s research output research as openly available and widely distributed as possible.
