Podcast Production Guide

Publishing Platforms

Choosing the Right Publishing Platform

You don’t need multiple platforms—selecting one hosting service is usually enough. Most distributors send your podcast to Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and other directories automatically.

Popular Hosting Platforms

  • Spotify for Podcasters (Free)
Easy to use, offers basic editing tools and clear analytics.

  • SoundCloud (Free / Pro)
Good for embedding episodes into websites and LibGuides.

  • Podbean (Paid)
Professional hosting with advanced analytics and scheduling tools.

  • Anchor Legacy Feeds
If migrating from older systems, Anchor feeds still work on many platforms.

💡 Tip: Choose one hosting service, then let it distribute your podcast everywhere automatically.

Preparing Your Episode for Publishing

Before uploading, make sure you have:

  • Final audio file: MP3, 128–192 kbps

  • Episode title: Clear and concise

  • Episode description: 2–3 sentences summarizing content

  • Show notes: Links, references, music credits, and guest info

  • Cover art: Minimum 1400x1400 px, simple and readable

  • Tags / Keywords: Helps with discoverability

💡 Keep your cover design consistent to build recognizability.

Analytics & Tracking

Most platforms offer built-in statistics:

  • Number of plays

  • Unique listeners

  • Listener geography

  • Listening duration

  • Device distribution

Use these insights to refine future episodes.

Promoting Your Podcast

Where to Promote

  • Institutional Social Media: Instagram, X, Facebook, LinkedIn

  • Library Website / LibGuides: Embed episodes directly

  • Newsletters / Email Digests: Highlight new episodes

  • Event Announcements: Promote podcasts related to exhibitions or talks

  • Guest Networks: Ask your guest to share the episode

Promotion Content Ideas

  • Quote graphics from the episode

  • Short audiograms (10–20 sec audio clips with waveform)

  • Behind-the-scenes photos

  • Episode highlight cards

  • Call-to-action banners (“Listen Now”)

💡 Consistent, lightweight promotion (1–2 posts per episode) is more effective than one big announcement.

Outreach Strategies (Academic & Public)

For Academic Audiences

  • Share with relevant research centers

  • Add episodes to course pages (LMS)

  • Highlight in departmental newsletters

  • Submit to university podcast directories, if available

For General Audiences

  • Use short, engaging social captions

  • Create simple story slides for Instagram

  • Feature the podcast in blog posts or website updates

Long-Term Visibility

Visibility grows over time not just during release week.

  • Maintain a regular release schedule

  • Group episodes by theme to create mini series

  • Re-share past episodes when relevant

  • Add episodes to digital exhibits or archive guides

  • Encourage reviews & ratings on listening platforms
